Look around and you will find
women achieving great feats in different fields of endeavours. While some of
these women maintain a home front with a budding career, a good number pour
themselves into their careers avoiding marriage and motherhood.
A woman who combines a family and
career is praised to high heavens, she’s the new ideal woman today. She is the
kind of woman young girls are advised to emulate. Similarly, the world is beginning
to acknowledge the greatness of single women making their marks in the world.
Stay at home mums seem to be the
only category of women left behind. They are the ones still looked down upon by
society and their fellow women. Why should a woman be a stay at home mum in
this century some would ask? I used to
be amongst those asking this question until recently I thought
“why not?” If
single women with career are getting praised, married women with careers adored
then stay at home mums deserve their own praises.
Mums who take care of their
children and homes full time are not doing the easiest of tasks. Most married women
with jobs employ nannies and extra hands for home help. Thus women who opt to
be full time mother or wife are doing no small feat.
Stay at home mothers are the most
likely to attend PTA meetings, children’s sports activities, graduation
ceremonies, help their child with homework and take the children to and from
school on time. Stay at home mothers have the requisite time essential in good
parenting.
They are unlike the single career
lady who places her career first or the career mother whose attention is
divided between home and office. The stay at home mums is the least selfish
type of women; they choose to place others’ needs above theirs. She prepares
food in time for her family. She maintains the home, has time to care for both
the children and husband. She is not like the selfish single career lady or
like the career mother who wants to eat her cake and have it.
Yet the world berates this class of
women. It is most shameful that stay at home mums allow their efforts and hard
work go without notice. They ought to blow their trumpets more often; it would
get the world to sit up and notice their worth.
