Are you still Unemployed? Try this…

I know first-hand what it feels like to search for a job – your dream job without success. It leaves one feeling depressed, angry and unintelligent.

A jobless fellow is bound to feel the fault lies with him/her; she/he would feel unqualified, not smart enough and every other self-depreciating feeling. The fact is that your joblessness is not totally your fault or government. Countries with large population are bound to have unemployment as one of its problems.

The problem of unemployment is not a Nigerian issue alone, it is a world problem; most recent university graduates end up doing jobs unrelated to their course of study. This is because of inadequate jobs from UK, to USA, Russia, China down to Nigeria, unemployment has become an ugly trend especially for university graduates.

This doesn't mean graduates should lose faith in securing his or her dream job rather applicants need to up their game plan in job search. An applicant needs to employ creative resources to convince prospective employers they are better than other applicants.

It all starts with getting your CV across to a person in position to offer you an employment. In this case, the CEO, Director or Executive Officer of a company is the most perfect. It is tasking to pass most company’s security and submit your CV to the CEO. This is what you can do;

1) Research the names of the company’s top executives and also important associations the company or executives belong to

2) Prepare a convincing cover letter and CV, enclose in a white envelope
.
3) Type and print the name, position of the executive on your white envelope

4)Take the envelope to the company’s corporate office, DO NOT GO AS YOURSELF. Go as a representative of an association the company is a member of or a vendor they use. For instance if the company is into manufacturing, you can claim to come from MAN or NAFDAC, If the company is an engineering firm you can claim to be from COREN or if the company is an advertising agency you can claim to come from AAAN or APCON to drop off documents to the executive addressed on white envelope .

The main thing is to get you CV and cover letter across to an executive member of the company.

5) Go back home and research for email address format of the company, once you find one, you can guess correctly what the executive email address should be. Send a follow up email, politely asking for an audience and assuring the executive why you would make a great employee of the company.

Using this method, send to as many companies as possible. However, ensure that your educational qualification is in line with the services of the company.

Another unconventional means of application is to send your work (proposal) to top executives of a company. If you are seeking a job in a media agency, a copy of a story, ad, graphics design, report or film created by you would give you an edge over others and can give prospective employers a look at your capability.

You can also create a vacancy. This is particular to those who studied unpopular courses such as psychology. You can create this vacancy by putting down a great proposal offering institutions or organisations your services at affordable price. We know Nigerian labour market is yet to value the importance of psychologists but that doesn't mean they are not needed. Schools and companies are all places that need psychologists; they just need the right person to convince them to create a psychologist position. Hence, you should send proposals to companies lacking the position you want, explain and convince them how you can make a difference by occupying the position you have in mind.

The last option is to start up your own company with friends that share similar values as you. You just need the presence of three ingredients – brains, social appeal and money. Any of your friends you choose to partner with must have one or all three of these.

Try any of these tricks and be sure to inform me how it goes.
